Audio Transcript: The purpose of the voyage was to discover a route to Asia. On 20 April Cartier departed from St. Malo with two ships and 61 men. After passing Cape Bonavista on 10 May he entered the Strait of Belle Isle on 9 June. By 9 August he had circumnavigated the Gulf of St. Lawrence, stopping at Chaleur Bay to trade for fur with the Micmac and at Gaspé to kidnap two men from the village of Stadacona at Québec. These men may have told him of the existence of the St. Lawrence River and large interior Aboriginal settlements. On 15 August he left the Strait of Belle Isle reaching St. Malo on 5 September.
