Rankin Inlet, Nunavut
Rankin Inlet, Nunavut
 |
We feel Nunavut will not bring immediate changes into our daily lives, but eventually we may see some changes in how things operate in our community.

Our Community
Rankin Inlet's Inuktitut name is Kangiqtiniq which means:
Inlet. Our elders are a very important part of our community,
they bring us together and guide us. We know most everyone
within the community which brings everyone together to support
each other. If we could change one thing within our community,
we would have a mall with very cheap prices. People in Rankin
Inlet work at a variety of jobs. Some jobs that young people
can get are working as cashier at the Northern or Co-op, (Grocery
stores) a waitress/waiter at the Siniktarvik or at the Nanook
Inn (Hotel and Restaurants), one of the biggest jobs you can
get is Babysitting (mostly for girls) and others. A large
part of the population is employed by the government but there
are some people in the private sector. For fun we play a lot
of sports like soccer and hockey, go on skidoo rides, go out
on the land, play video and computer games and hang out with
friends. We eat foods like pizza and chicken but we also enjoy
foods found here in the north like caribou, fish, birds, frozen
raw meat, seal and rabbit. We have listed some of the animals
you can find in our community and we have little vegetation.
We are located on the Canadian Shield so we mostly see rocks.
We do not have trees only small shrubs. We do not have grass
only moss which is food for the caribou. Our population is
approximately 2200 people.
The Future
We do not see that many changes in the next ten years. We hope the community will continue to grow and expand with new buildings and people.
